Cupping

Minimally Invasive Modality To Stimulate The Flow Of Qi & Blood

What is it: Minimally invasive Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) modality that involves the placing of cups on the skin to create a suction to stimulate the flow of Qi, enhance blood circulation, and facilitate the body’s natural healing process. The suction is typically created by heat or mechanical pump, and the cups can be left in place (stationary cupping) or moved along the skin (slide cupping).

How it works: The suction draws the skin and underlying tissues upward resulting in the breaking of the tiny blood vessels underneath the skin, causing a slight discoloration in the area called Sha. When the brain picks up signals of this minor injury, it triggers the body’s self-healing process, leading to an increase in blood circulation, improved lymphatic flow and the release of built-up fluid.

Sha: Refers to the reddish or purplish marks that appear on the skin after cupping or gua sha. These marks are caused by the extravasation of blood in the subcutis, similar to petechiae or bruising. According to TCM, Sha indicates areas where there is stagnation or blockages in Qi and/or blood. Releasing this stagnation, by the appearance of sha, is believed to restore balance and promote healing within the body.
